\nDays in the year
\nWhen we can see
\nPast and future
\nNow more clearly,

\nI watch what binds me. In snow,

\nI can see forgiveness rise
\nlike failure steaming from the shoulders

\nTheir notebook with another age
\nIdyllic if quite gory, it
\nIs them: the Poet Laureate!<\/p>\n
\nFrom White Cliffs to the Town Hall green,
\nFrom Russell Street to Suosso Lane,
\nFrom Herring Pond to Morton Park,
\n& High Cliff Landing after dark,
\nEast Bay for lunch, Dunkie\u2019s at dawn,
\nFrom Bramhall\u2019s to the Mayflower\u2019s ark,
\nIn West Plymouth & Manomet
\nThey\u2019re home: The Poet Laureate.<\/p>\n
\nTo track our times with language wrought
\nFrom all the best of truths we\u2019re taught;
\nTo give us words we yearn to say
\nAt weddings & our dying day;
\nFor strength to cope with what fate\u2019s brought
\n& when we find we\u2019ve lost our way
\n& there\u2019s no telling where we\u2019ll get:
\nWe need a Poet Laureate.<\/p>\n
\nair\u2019s archive wide open:
\nsee from here to Holmes Field,
\nsee Gurnet gleaming
\nwhite thumbtack\u2014
\nunwashed-denim-blue water,
\nseams of waves out past the Point
\nwhere we walked this morning
\nand now watch from a porch across harbor.
\nThat way, West
\nto California, this way, East, the bay,
\nProvincetown monument, a gas tank
\ntwo horizon rifts, then water
\nfor a while, Europe\u2014
\nbut in here jetty
\nand beach, low-tide sandbar afternoon.<\/p>\n
\nanother coming back in the channel;
\ncold air warm light,
\nwe can see further:
\nobjects way out there feel closer\u2014
\nrelativity of scale and distance. Memory.<\/p>\n
\non abacus horizon.
\n~<\/p>\n
\nin plague time I wanted to
\nescape my body<\/p>\n
\nas a reliable fish
\nalive with purpose<\/p>\n
\nnot unhook our souls without
\nviolence, so doubt<\/p>\n
\nthough I said thanks aloud for
\nthe herrings\u2019 return.

\nbluegreen negotiations w\/ time
\nprescient present and eternity
\nbluegreen waves perpetually
\nask how can you hold fast the past?<\/p>\n
\nbluegreen primeval fog boiling above
\nbluegreen always the same changing
\nbluegreen viscosity of dream
\nbluegreen below a rotund monthly moon
\nbluegreen blinking fireplug at channel\u2019s turn
\nbluegreen lightning bugs on my notebook
\nbluegreen the open-page ocean.<\/p>\n
\nmarvelous
\nbluegreen seam of pure ol\u2019 sooth me oh leviathan.
